How a parking heater works

Technology explained in easy terms

  1. You activate the parking heater using one of the remote controllers, your mobile phone or using the digital heater timer.
  2. As soon as the unit is activated the dosing pump delivers fuel from the vehicle's tank to the heater unit.
  3. An electric current is applied to the glow plug inside the heater unit and the plug begins to glow. At the same time ambient air is drawn into the heater.
  4. The fuel is vaporised by the hot plug. The fuel/air mixture ignites once the required temperature has been reached.
  5. The cold coolant water now flows through the heater, is heated and is then pumped through the coolant circuit.
  6. The hot water is fed into the vehicle's heater radiator and the fan blows the warmth directly into the passenger compartment.
  7. The warm water then flows from the heater radiator to the engine which is also warmed up.
  8. Once the warmed coolant has returned to the heater unit the cycle begins over again.

A Webasto parking heater drastically reduces exhaust emissions – by as much as 50% for a petrol-engined vehicle.

Diesel drivers are at an advantage

Many diesel vehicles can be upgraded with a parking heater at no great cost – and help spare the environment, says the ADAC.
